Microbiome Mapping
A snapshot of the microbial colonies we host

Microbiome Testing NZ & Christchurch

At Smartgenes, we offer microbiome testing, including personalised support for clients right here in Christchurch or online throughout NZ. We’ve chosen to partner with Nutripath, a reputable functional testing laboratory based in Victoria, Australia. Their close location means your sample reaches the lab quickly via express delivery, ensuring it arrives in excellent condition, so you get the most accurate and reliable results possible.

What are the first steps to get a Microbiome Test

There are many differing types of gut microbiome tests on the market.  Each one offers different layers of testing, using differing diagnostic tools.  Some are very simple offering a brief snapshot into the microbial colonies, others are extremely in-depth.  The prices reflect the levels of testing.

Knowing what level reflects the best spend of your money is very difficult.  This is why we always recommend having a full initial consultation before diving into gut microbiome testing. This gives us the opportunity to understand your unique health picture and recommend the most relevant and cost-effective testing options for you. Sometimes, another type of test may offer better insights depending on your specific symptoms or goals.  Sometimes no testing, and just starting to address gut function is the best option.  Our goal is not to sell you a test, but to assess what is best for your gut and the symptoms you are experiencing.

If you're simply looking for a comprehensive gut check to support energy, mood, digestion, or immunity, the MicroBiomix Metagenomic Mapping (MMM) test is a great place to start. It offers a comprehensive look at your gut microbiome and highlights any imbalances that may be holding your health back.  This is currently the gold standard in microbiome testing.

Whether you're based in Christchurch or elsewhere in New Zealand, our experienced support and professional microbiome testing NZ services can help you take a deeper look at your gut health, and make informed, natural choices to support your wellbeing.

Gut Microbiome Testing

Here is a selection of gut microbiome testing options currently available in New Zealand. Additional tests are also available, offering varying levels of detail and sitting between these core options.
CDSA Level 1
A comprehensive assessment of the microbiological environment of the gut. It includes Macroscopy, Microscopy description, Bacteriology, Mycology (yeasts) and Parasitology. This test reports on pathogenic and imbalanced colonising organisms, as well as identifying the levels of beneficial flora.  The level 1 assessment is a cost effective option and can be requested when you suspect a gut infection or want to confirm/exclude dysbiosis.

Complete Microbiome Mapping (CMM)
Designed to assess a patient’s microbiome from a single stool sample, with particular attention to microbes that cause disease or that disrupt normal microbial balance and contribute to perturbations in the GI flora and contribute to illness.  The panel is a comprehensive collection of microbial targets as well as immune and digestive markers. It screens for pathogenic bacteria, commensal bacteria, opportunistic pathogens, fungi, viruses, and parasites.

Microbiomix Metagenomic Mapping (MMM)
This mapping utilises metagenomic sequencing (shotgun).  The term shotgun is deployed in reference to the unbiased and random sequencing of all of the genetic information contained within the provided stool sample.  Thus allowing for a picture of the full diversity of the microbiome.  For gut health, diversity is key.

MMM includes DNA from bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microorganisms.  This new form of mapping covers off 28,000 microbial species.  It also reports on biochemical markers relating to digestion, inflammation and intestinal permeability.

Shotgun Metagenomics is our preferred tool for stool analysis and microbiome reporting.

Oral Microbiome Test

Oral Microbiome
Links between our oral health and our overall health have been known for some time.  As the second most diverse microbiome in the body, more research is now pointing to the oral microbiome and its links to adverse health outcomes.  These links include many inflammatory conditions that affect neurological health, joint health, cardiovascular health, immune health and metabolic conditions such as diabetes and obesity.

The effects of a poor oral microbiome also has localised effects such as inflammatory conditions of the gums and dental caries.

Quantitative PCR technology is used to accurately measure and quantify the oral microbiome.

Vaginal Microbiome Test

Vaginal Microbiome
The vagina is home to a complex ecosystem of organisms that may include bacteria, viruses, parasites and yeasts. Some of these organisms are important in keeping us healthy as they act to discourage other potential pathogens from thriving. Disruptions in balance of any of these can lead to infections and/or uncomfortable symptoms. Every vaginal microbiome is different and factors such as age, hormonal disruptions and even antibiotic/probiotic use can contribute to changes.

Using PCR analysis, the vaginal microbiome.
