Can Your Headache Be Caused by Spinal Misalignment?

5/1/2026

If you've been reaching for painkillers every time a headache strikes, you might be treating the symptom rather than the cause. Many people don't realise that their recurring headaches could actually be originating from their neck and spine rather than their head.

The Surprising Connection Between Your Neck and Your Head Pain

Your head and neck are intimately connected through a complex network of nerves, muscles, and joints. When something goes wrong in your cervical spine, the seven vertebrae that make up your neck can trigger pain that radiates upward into your head, creating what's
known as a cervicogenic headache.

The term "cervicogenic" simply means "originating from the neck." These headaches are classified as secondary headaches because the pain source isn't in your head at all, it's coming from dysfunction in your cervical spine and the surrounding soft tissues.

How Does Spinal Misalignment Cause Headaches?

Think about how much time you spend looking at screens, sitting at a desk, or looking down at your phone. These everyday activities put significant strain on your neck, and over time, this can lead to:

Poor posture and forward head position
When your head shifts forward from its natural alignment, it places enormous stress on the upper cervical vertebrae. Your shoulders compensate by stooping forward, creating muscular imbalances that can trigger headaches.

Joint dysfunction in the upper neck
The atlanto-occipital joint (where your skull meets your spine) and the upper cervical joints are particularly sensitive. When these joints become stiff or misaligned, they can irritate nearby nerves and refer pain to your head.

Muscle tension and trigger points
Muscles in your neck and shoulders, particularly the upper trapezius, suboccipital muscles, and sternocleidomastoid, can develop tight, hyperirritable spots called trigger points. These trigger points don't just cause local pain; they can send pain signals up into your head,
creating a tension-type headache.

The trigeminocervical connection
Here's the fascinating part: sensory nerves from your upper cervical spine actually converge with the trigeminal nerve (which supplies sensation to your face and scalp) in an area called the trigeminocervical nucleus. This is why problems in your neck can create pain that you feel in your forehead, temples, or behind your eyes.

Common Signs Your Headache Is Coming From Your Neck

Not sure if your headaches are neck-related?  Look out for these telltale signs:

● One-sided head pain that starts at the base of your skull and travels forward to your forehead or temple
● Neck stiffness or reduced range of motion, especially when rotating your head
● Pain that worsens with certain neck positions or movements
● Shoulder or upper back tension that accompanies your headache
● Headaches that start in your neck before moving into your head
● Relief when you rest your neck or lie down
● A "heavy" or "tight" sensation at the top of your shoulders

What Causes Spinal Misalignment Leading to Headaches?

Several factors can contribute to neck-related headaches:

Postural stress
Hours spent hunched over a computer, driving, or looking at your phone can gradually shift your spine out of its optimal alignment.

Previous injuries
Whiplash from car accidents, sports injuries, or falls can damage the delicate structures in your neck and create long-lasting issues.

Repetitive strain
Certain occupations or hobbies that require holding your head in awkward positions for extended periods can overload neck muscles.

Stress and tension
Psychological stress often manifests physically in the neck and shoulder muscles, creating a feedback loop of tension and pain. If you're dealing with chronic stress or anxiety, working with a naturopath can help address the underlying causes while we work on the physical manifestations.
Headaches and neck pain
Poor sleep positions
Sleeping with your neck in an awkward position or using an unsuitable pillow can strain cervical structures overnight.

Underlying health factors
Sometimes, chronic inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, or hormonal imbalances can contribute to muscle tension and headaches. Naturopathic assessment can help identify if these systemic factors are playing a role in your headaches.

How Osteopathy Can Help

At MK Osteopathy, we take a holistic approach to understanding and treating headaches that originate from the neck and spine. Rather than just masking the pain with medication, we aim to identify and address the root cause.

Comprehensive assessment
We'll carefully evaluate your posture, neck movement, muscle tension, and joint function to determine if your spine is contributing to your headaches. This includes looking at your whole-body alignment and how different areas might be compensating for issues elsewhere.

Hands-on treatment
Using gentle manual therapy techniques, we can help restore proper alignment to your cervical spine, release muscle tension, and improve joint mobility. This might include:
● Soft tissue massage to release trigger points
● Joint mobilisation to improve movement
● Myofascial release techniques
● Cranial osteopathy for upper cervical issues

Rehabilitation exercises
We'll teach you specific exercises to strengthen the deep neck flexors and stabilising muscles, helping to correct postural imbalances and prevent future headaches.

Lifestyle guidance
Simple changes to your workstation setup, sleeping position, or daily habits can make a significant difference in preventing neck-related headaches.

A Holistic Approach: Combining Osteopathy and Naturopathy

For many of our patients dealing with chronic or recurring headaches, we've found that the best results come from addressing both the structural issues (through osteopathy) and the underlying systemic factors (through naturopathy).

When to consider naturopathic support alongside osteopathy:
● If your headaches are linked to stress, anxiety, or hormonal fluctuations
● When you suspect food sensitivities or digestive issues might be contributing
● If you're experiencing chronic inflammation that affects your muscles and joints
● When nutritional deficiencies could be impacting muscle function and recovery
● If you have chronic fatigue or Long COVID symptoms alongside your headaches

We're proud to work alongside Vanessa Winter at SmartGENES Naturopathic Clinic, one of Christchurch's most experienced naturopaths.

Together, we can provide a truly integrated approach addressing the physical structure of your spine while also supporting your body's overall health and healing capacity.

What You Can Do Right Now

While professional treatment is important for addressing the underlying issues, here are some strategies you can try today:

Improve your posture
Sit with your head aligned over your shoulders, not jutting forward. Use a lumbar support if needed and position your computer screen at eye level.

Take movement breaks
Set a timer to remind yourself to stand up, stretch, and move your neck gently every 30-45 minutes.

Check your pillow
Your pillow should support the natural curve of your neck. Side sleepers generally need a thicker pillow than back sleepers.

Apply gentle heat
A warm pack on your neck and shoulders can help relax tense muscles.

Practice stress management
Deep breathing exercises, meditation, or gentle yoga can help reduce the muscle tension that contributes to headaches. Naturopathic approaches to anxiety can also be incredibly helpful here.

Stay hydrated
Dehydration can worsen both tension-type and cervicogenic headaches.

Support your body's natural healing
Ensuring you have adequate nutrition and addressing any underlying inflammation can help your muscles and joints recover more effectively. Consider naturopathic consultation if you suspect systemic factors are involved.

When to Seek Professional Help

You should see a healthcare professional if you experience:

● Headaches that are increasing in frequency or severity
● Sudden, severe headaches unlike any you've had before
● Headaches accompanied by fever, stiff neck, confusion, or neurological symptoms
● Headaches that don't respond to over-the-counter medication
● Headaches that significantly interfere with your daily life

The Bottom Line

If you've been living with recurring headaches and haven't considered your neck as a potential source, it might be time to look beyond the paracetamol. Many people find significant relief once the underlying spinal and muscular issues are properly addressed.

Your headaches don't have to be a life sentence. By addressing the root cause, whether it's poor posture, spinal misalignment, muscle tension, stress, nutritional factors, or a combination of these, you can reduce the frequency and intensity of your headaches and get back to feeling like yourself again.

We believe in treating the whole person, not just the symptom. That's why we work collaboratively with other Christchurch health practitioners, including SmartGENES Naturopathic Clinic, to ensure you receive comprehensive care tailored to your unique needs.
